11/19/07 - A complete Thanksgiving dinner on their doorsteps gave hope to 200 needy families in South Florida on Nov. 17.
The annual Boys Town of South Florida Basket Brigade, sponsored in conjunction with the Anthony Robbins Foundation, brought in volunteers by the droves to provide individual Thanksgiving food baskets for families to celebrate the holidays.
“The communities of South Florida have given so much to our program and we just want to share that hope with others who need it,” said Amy Simpson, Boys Town of South Florida Site Director. “The best way to show we are thankful for what we have is to help those in need.”
Approximately 60 volunteers participated in assembling the baskets filled with turkey and holiday trimmings and delivering them to very appreciative families. These volunteers, made up of individuals and groups like Junior League of the Palm Beaches and West Palm 100, helped make the event such a great success.
“Our volunteers really make all of the difference,” said Simpson. “They dedicate themselves to a cause and do whatever needs to be done to make sure the event is a success. Without them filling and delivering baskets, many of those 200 families would not have been able to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal.”
The Basket Brigade, as part of National Family Week held Nov. 18-24, emphasizes the connections that support and strengthen families. Each basket included a note saying: “This gift comes from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else someday.”
