The stars were out Oct. 11, as Boys Town Texas presented Bill Greehey, Chairman of Valero Energy Corporation, with the Spirit of Youth Award.

"Mr. Greehey's genuine leadership efforts have made him a real hero to so many," said Father Steve Boes. "His contributions to Boys Town, both personally and through his employees, have been invaluable to the success of our children."

Through his dedication to helping children and their families, Greehey has become one of the leading philanthropists in the nation, earning many philanthropic awards and titles, and appearing on the cover of "Philanthropy" magazine. Greehey also initiated a mission at Valero that promotes and encourages community service.

"Mr. Greehey has shown an overwhelming commitment to the community of Texas and her children," said Wade Rascoe, Boys Town Texas Executive Director. "He uses his energy, leadership and philanthropy to change the lives of thousands through education and community involvement."

"It has been a pleasure to recognize him for all he has done for our organization, for education, and for the community at large," stated Linda Kohnen and Beverly Zaiontz, Chairs of the Gala.

Under Greehey's leadership, Valero has been ranked among the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America by "Fortune Magazine" and one of the 100 Best Managed Companies in the World by "IndustryWeek Magazine."

The evening's events included a dinner, live and silent auction, and a special presentation by Dr. Dennis Dillon, Executive Director of Boys Town New Orleans. Also attending the event was Mickey Rooney, who starred in the 1938 Oscar-winning movie "Boys Town."

Boys Town Texas provided direct service to 561 children and 114 families through Residential Services, Short-Term Residential Services, and Family Based Services in 2005. Another 80,411 children and families were indirectly assisted through the Boys Town National Hotline and through outreach and professional training programs.
