Pennsylvania Aftercare Program Receives Christmas Tidings of Comfort and Joy

Pennsylvania’s Aftercare Program received several blessings this holiday season. Many of the families the program serves struggle financially, and the idea of parents buying Christmas presents for their children is simply out of the question.

This year, the Aftercare Program submitted the names of six families to the Pennsylvania Cares: Adopt A Family Program. This program allows agencies to submit the names of families who cannot buy Christmas presents. Then, other families and agencies adopt them, supplying meals and Christmas gifts.

“It was amazing, the number of phone calls and the amount of care that the families and agencies took to ensure our families got what they needed and wanted this Christmas,” said Laura Detwiler, Director of the Pennsylvania Aftercare Program.

To add to the giving spirit, a woman who was moving out of her Pennsylvania home contacted Boys Town to see if they had any need for an entire house of furniture.

The Aftercare Program gladly accepted her donation. On December 20, during record cold weather, staff and volunteers moved furniture out of the donor’s home and into the homes of four thankful Aftercare families.

In the same spirit of giving, several of the Aftercare youth also chose to bake cookies for their families and friends.  One youth stated, “It’s nice to have something to give to my family, because I know how I used to treat them and I don’t want to do that again.”
