Boys Town Pennsylvania Celebrates 90th Anniversary, Commitment to Youth

Children, families and employees danced through the halls as Boys Town Pennsylvania celebrated the organization’s 90th anniversary Dec. 12.

Nearly 60 guests honored Father Flanagan’s dream and learned of Boys Town’s plans to continue its mission of saving children and healing families.

“Because of your willingness to carry on Father Flanagan’s dream, so many of America’s abused and neglected children have been saved,” stated U.S. Senator Robert Casey in a letter presented by his Legislative Aide, Erin Wilson.  “The work you do is truly commendable and provides a great service, not only to those directly involved, but to the community as a whole.”

Donna Buccieri, Boys Town Youth Care Worker, shares an opening prayer for the 90th Anniversary celebration.

Beginning with an opening prayer and special thanks to dignitaries, including James Randolph, Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Juvenile Justice, guests enjoyed cake while viewing a presentation of how Father Flanagan founded Boys Town. “As I went through the presentation, it was a reminder to me of the legacy that Father Flanagan left with us and how far ahead of his time he was,” said Eric Keisling, Boys Town Pennsylvania Site Director.  “Many of the principles established by Father Flanagan 90 years ago, such as self-government and treating children with dignity and respect, are still the healthiest way to take care of children today.”

Demonstrating the continued commitment to Father Flanagan’s dream, Boys Town Pennsylvania revealed the organization’s new brand during the celebration.  The new brand represents the dedication to providing youth care and health care not only to girls and boys, but also to families.

Boys Town Pennsylvania girls then treated attendees to a special presentation with the help from Arnetta Gilstrop, a Philadelphia school district teacher who works at Boys Town Pennsylvania.  The girls explained to the audience what Boys Town means to them, and recited some of their favorite Father Flanagan quotes.  They also created a history of Boys Town quiz for staff members, complete with prizes for correct answers.

“It was kind of funny, the girls asked when Boys Town last changed its name and were looking for the answer 2000, when in reality the name had just been changed half an hour ago,” said Keisling.

“It was a very nice event, and the staff was fantastic.”
