Holidays a Time for Tradition and Family
Christmas at Boys Town is a time of tradition, family, giving and hope. Our children reflect on the spirit of the season, and the promise of the blessings a new year will bring.
At Boys Town New York, no child goes without. Our kids are as excited as any to wake up Christmas morning to presents under the tree. They are also excited to celebrate the real reason for the season.
"If I could give the Lord a gift, it would be my heart," said 14-year-old Devon.
Following church services on Christmas Day - whether protestant, Catholic or Jewish - each home takes on a small community project. This year, the girls will deliver homemade cookies to a local homeless shelter, baked as one of their holiday traditions. They know the hurt of being alone and forgotten on this special holiday.
"The best Christmas I've had has been this one because I have a mother, father and sisters," said 17-year-old Jamyce.
The Christmas feast in a Boys Town home is served with all the trimmings. The turkey is carved right on the table. It's a tradition that Boys Town will always keep-no matter how many visitors are there.
At the end of the day, the families of the Boys Town children are invited to the home for dessert and holiday festivities. After all, there's no better day to spend with loved ones than Christmas.
"The best gift I could give my family would be my love for them and to show them I am there for them," said 15-year-old Delia. "My family would appreciate it."
