Boys Town teen pursues educational goals and basketball dreams by attending new school

LaQuan’s life didn’t always hold the promise of a bright future, but after only a year in the Girls and

Boys Town New York Long-Term Residential Program, possibilities have changed drastically for this Brooklyn youth.

An exemplary athlete, LaQuan was accepted to the George Westinghouse High School as an honors student in the pre-engineering program and member of the basketball team.

Candido Pineiro, Westinghouse Director of Sports, sought out LaQuan and introduced him to the school’s basketball coach in hope of getting him on the team.

“LaQuan is a remarkably talented athlete, but he is also an extremely intelligent young man, with wonderful academic potential,” said Pola Livingston, Boys Town New York Residential Coordinator.  “He is bright and articulate and has much more to offer the world than simply athletic ability.  His enrollment in this school will only help him to further his potential.”

“LaQuan is a promising young man who is a delight to be around,” said Damon Canada, LaQuan’s Family-Teacher along with his wife, Iza.  “He serves as a reminder as to why we put so much time and effort into the positive development of today’s youth.”

In addition to the rigorous academic and athletic work, LaQuan will also attend a Saturday program at Westinghouse to help him prepare for college.  He hopes to one day study and play basketball at Duke University.
