Boys Town New York
Food, Fun and Magic
With fifteen dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers and a cloudless sky, children and families from the Marolla Place, Dean Street and Bergen Street shelters enjoyed a full day of seaside activity at the Boys Town New York fifth annual barbeque.
This year’s barbeque, sponsored by KPMG and Ambrosia Food, was a day filled with games and activities, like flag football, basketball and double-dutch jump rope.
“This year we tried something new by establishing a Barbeque Committee. The committee met for two months to plan this day, and it paid off,” said Zankhana Shukla, Program Support Services Coordinator. “The kids had an incredible time. The day was full of food, fun and magic.”
A real magician - Manny the Magician - volunteered his entertaining expertise. Manny performed a mid-afternoon magic routine between the basketball and football games. As the kids relaxed eating a hamburger or hot dog, Manny pulled many tricks out of his magic hat. He even made a Marolla Place youth’s, legs disappear!
Overall, the day offered endless teaching opportunities for the youth to enhance independent living skills and social skills. “I’d really like to thank our sponsors Ambrosia and KPMG, the Boys Town New York Volunteer Council, and our staff for making this day happen,” said Shukla. “It’s such an important day for our kids. I can’t wait for next year!”
