Runners prepare to take their marks for the 2007 HOPE 5K Run/Walk benefiting Boys Town Louisiana. More than 100 runners took part in the competition to raise money for at-risk children and families.

New Orleans Community Walks for Hope

On a breezy 68-degree morning Oct. 13, New Orleans runners and walkers recognizing the need for a strong family program came together to raise funds for Boys Town Louisiana.

One hundred participants gathered at Washington Square Park for the 2007 HOPE 5K Run/Walk, coordinated by the Wyndham New Orleans Hotel at Canal Place and the Faubourg Marigny Improvement Association, raising more than $15,000 and much awareness for Boys Town Louisiana programs benefiting severely at-risk youth.

“The support of the New Orleans community for Boys Town is outstanding and very inspiring,” said Dr. Dennis Dillon, Boys Town Louisiana Executive Director. “The strong turnout shows the true commitment our community has to help our severely at-risk youth.”

Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman, the event’s honorary chairman who sponsored 45 deputies and their family members to participate in the race, said Boys Town Louisiana’s family-style and culturally competent programs are strong alternatives for offenders in the juvenile justice system.

Men, women and children of all abilities wearing t-shirts designed by a Boys Town New Orleans youth conquered the 3.1-mile course. Nathaniel Gordon and Sarah Borealis were the overall winners in their respective male and female divisions.

“Events like this that help make sure all children are taken care of are a great way to help rebuild New Orleans,” said Chris Costello, Faubourg Marigny Improvement Association President. “Boys Town is one of our strong partners.”

Besides participating in the HOPE walk, participants also enjoyed a five piece jazz band and food and drinks donated by several community organizations.
