World's Smallest Horse Visits Boys Town

At 17-and-a-half inches tall and weighing 57 pounds, the world's smallest horse, Thumbelina, surprised Boys Town Wegner Middle School children during her visit June 25. "I was expecting it to be bigger," said Ashley, an excited Boys Town youth.

Thumbelina's visit to Boys Town is part of The Thumbelina Children's Tour, which includes visits to hospitals, schools, children's group homes and shelters across the United States in effort to raise $1 million for children's charities associated with the Thumbelina Charitable Foundation.

Michael Goessling, one of Thumbelina's owners, explained that most miniature horses that exhibit dwarf features are not as healthy as Thumbelina. "She has this way of making it seem like anything's possible," he said.Thumbelina, a stout dwarf chestnut mare, was foaled May 1, 2001, at Goose Creek Farms miniature horse ranch in St. Louis, Mo. She received her Guinness BookTM world-record standing in September 2006.
