Speaker's Message Stands Tall Over Boys Town Youth
Though standing just 4 feet, 4 inches tall, Chris Hollyfield has a tall order for Boys Town youth: respect others, despite their differences.
Speaking to Boys Town youth at Wegner Middle School Sept. 13, Hollyfield, founder of the 3D TEAM (Teasing Erodes All Mentally) Foundation, conveyed how he overcame negative stereotypes he endured because of dwarfism.
"You must have the three D's in your life - dedication, determination and desire - to be a friend and not a bully," Hollyfield said. "Remember, please don't cheat, believe in yourself, be respectful to yourself and always to your coaches, teachers and parents."
Educating kids about the consequences of teasing and bullying in schools, Hollyfield, a former professional wrestler and weight lifting record holder, provides a strong example of someone who overcame adversity to achieve success.
He told the captivated audience how he was teased and bullied in school and was only treated nicely after others realized he was strong and athletic. "People wanted to be my friend because I could throw a football far, not because of who I was as a person," he said. "Take time to get to know your classmates. If you're someone in this room teasing someone and think it's cool - it's not."
Eljay Murray, who attends Wegner School and gave a tour to Hollyfield, said he learned a lot from Hollyfield. "It is important to not give up on yourself and have dedication, determination and desire," he said.
The 3D TEAM Foundation, based in Orlando, Fla., works with community groups and schools to educate children about the consequences of teasing and bullying in schools. It strives to help kids develop a healthy attitude about themselves and others, as learning to respect each other will make attending school a more enjoyable experience.
