Father Flanagan House Restorations Recognized by National Park Service

The National Park Service officially recognized restorations to the west wing of the Father Flanagan House and Museum in a ceremony at the historic home in December.

Funded with donations from Boys Town alumni, the three year project completed by the Boys Town Maintenance Department, with assistance from Boys Town youth, saw the dormitories, chapel and dining hall restored to their historical likeness from Father Flanagan’s era.

“Thank you to everyone who carries the dream of Father Flanagan in your heart,” said Father Boes. “I especially thank John Mollison for securing the resources for this restoration and all those who dedicated resources, time and talent to make this possible.”

“This is a labor of love for those who are alumni,” said John Mollison, ’64, Vice President of Human and Physical Resources. “This is a great reflection of Father Flanagan.”

John Mollison, Vice President of Human and Physical Resources; Tom Lynch, Director of Hall of History and Father Flanagan House and Museum and Father Steve Boes, Boys Town National Executive Director; accept the official recognition for the Flanagan House restorations from Gary Candelaria of the National Park Service.

A plaque presented during the ceremony by Gary Candelaria with the National Park Service, acknowledges the rehabilitation followed the guidelines of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, helping maintain the Father Flanagan House as the most historic structure in the Village of Boys Town.

An added element to the restored rooms is nearly 25 quilts donated by the Mother’s Guild. The quilts are displayed throughout the house, most notably on each bed in the recreated dormitory.

“Everyone did an outstanding job in recreating the rooms,” said Tom Lynch, Director of Hall of History and Father Flanagan House and Museum. “These rooms bring you right back to Father Flanagan’s era.”
