Father Flanagan’s Dream Coming True in Chicago
Father Flanagan’s dream of providing help, healing and hope to America’s disadvantaged youth continued April 27 at the same site where he once spoke about the need to invest in our youth. Soldier Field in Chicago welcomed the Boys Town founder in 1941, and 65 years later an influential group gathered there to propel his legacy even further.
Along with Father Steven Boes, Boys Town National Executive Director, and Paul Lopez Boys Town Chicago Chairman, Chicago’s philanthropic community came together to raise funds and awareness for the new Chicago site. The site broke ground in March, and the $250-a-plate reception helped raise funds for its development.
“Father Flanagan’s dream continues to prosper here in Chicago,” said Father Boes. “We are all making it possible for more of Chicago’s youth to make new friends and learn to be proud citizens of our community.”
The event, emceed by CBS 2 Chicago News Anchor Antonio Mora, gave those gathered an update on the site being constructed in Chicago’s Back of the Yards Neighborhood. The building’s foundation was recently poured and it’s scheduled to open in November.
The short-term residential crisis center will offer help, healing and hope to 250 to 300 children a year. Boys Town Chicago will work with the Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and the Peace and Education Coalition of the Back of the Yards to help at risk children and create a safer neighborhood. |
