Bo Outlaw Scores Big with Central Florida Youth
Bo Outlaw, power forward for the Orlando Magic, provided a few pointers in basketball and in life to the children of Boys Town Central Florida. His visit Jan. 17 helped christen a new basketball court, and forged a friendship between the player and the severely at-risk children who call Boys Town home.
"I didn't come out here for the camera crews, I came out here for the kids," said Outlaw.
"There have been a lot of exciting things that have happened for our kids here today with Bo's visit," said Greg Zbylut, Boys Town Central Florida Executive Director. "It's wonderful to have a star with so many giving qualities as a role model for our kids."
During his visit, Outlaw toured the Demetree Campus and learned about its many services for children. Here, abused, abandoned and neglected children learn how to become better citizens by living and learning as a family - finding help, healing and hope while overcoming adversity.
"I used to be mad, and it's no fun . you don't see your advantages when you walk around mad and sad," said Outlaw, speaking to a crowd of children, families and staff. "It's a good feeling to see these kids' smiles."
"Our children learn from Bo that you don't have to be an NBA star to be successful in life," said Zbylut. "He's a great philanthropist with a great heart - and qualities like those will help all of our children be successful."
For his many generous contributions to children in need, Boys Town Central Florida named Outlaw its first Honorary Citizen. "We're proud to welcome Bo as a citizen of our community for his work as a mentor and role model for children all across Central Florida," said Zbylut.
A few of the children got the chance to shoot freethrows against the NBA star. Outlaw also christened the new court with a slam dunk.
"Bo also donates many of his tickets so our kids can attend the games - you can bet he'll have a cheering section from Boys Town."
Boys Town youth will attend the Jan. 23 matchup between the Orlando Magic and the Dallas Mavericks. The organization will be featured as part of "Boys Town Night at the Magic."
