All Races, All Colors, All Creeds…
African American Achievements at Boys Town

On December 12, 1917, Father Edward J. Flanagan opened his revolutionary Home for youth, and made the radical decision to welcome all boys regardless of race or religion.

African American children were amongst the first residents to live with Father Flanagan. In an American culture where all aspects of society were segregated by race or religion, Father Flanagan created a community where all the children were encouraged to follow their dreams. Over the years the African American graduates of the Home have excelled in their accomplishments.

Many African Americans of merit have been active in assisting the Home to change the way America cares for her children. These individuals serve as positive role models for the children of Boys Town.
