John Cook to Share Motivating Message with Boys Town Youth

Cook to Headline Booster Banquet May 1

As head coach of the Nebraska volleyball program, John Cook has lived out his philosophy of “dreaming big.” Continually striving to improve himself and his team, Cook has made the Huskers a top national contender in volleyball. He will share his motivating message with Boys Town youth as the keynote speaker of the 41st Booster Banquet May 1.

When Cook took over the team in 2000, he saw a program that had potential to grow and become a staple of pride for the Husker Nation. In 2006, Cook’s dream was realized as Nebraska went 33-1 and captured the school’s third national title, enhancing volleyball on local and national levels.

Cook’s accomplishments haven’t gone unnoticed, as he is a two-time AVCA National Coach of the Year, earning the prestigious honor in 2000 and 2005, and a two-time Big 12 Coach of the Year.

John Cook is many things: an award-winning coach, father, husband and an advocate for children. From coaching an Olympic team to the 2006 National Volleyball Champions at UNL, Cook has never forgotten who always supports him – his family.

Throughout his successful career, Cook has remained dedicated and supportive of his family and at-risk youth. Through his involvement in youth athletics and as the spokesperson for the Children Advocacy Center in Lincoln, Neb., Cook encourages kids to dream big.

“John Cook is a strong presence in our state as being a guy who goes after what he wants,” said Robert Stoffel, Vice President of the boys Town Sports Booster Club. “He has led many successful volleyball teams in his career, but it is his commitment to family and saving children that build his character.”

The annual Sports Booster Banquet recognizes the achievements of Boys town athletes throughout the year. Most outstanding and most dedicated players awards winners are announced for each sport.

Alumni are also recognized with induction into the Boys Town Hall of Fame. Jarrod “Jake” Williams, ’49, Larry Kennedy, ’38, James Cook, ’55 and Nick Loncaric, ‘40 will be honored for their athletic achievements during their time at Boys Town. Williams, Kennedy and Loncaric will be enshrined posthumously.

The Boys Town Booster Banquet will be held Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Convention Center located at 3321 S. 72 St. Tickets are $80 per person or $800 for a table of 10. For more information contact Shirley Gosier at 498-1299 or gosiers@boystown.org.
